life

Maeve has been with us for two (almost three) weeks. (Takes a while for a blog post to go from draft to published lately.) And of course now we can’t imagine life without her! Overall everything is going really well and Maeve is an easy baby. Or maybe we just have full confidence in what we’re doing! During the day she nurses and sleeps. Mostly I hold or wear Maeve but we’re getting better at anticipating her naps and awake time and I try hand her off to Chris too so he can have time with her too. It seems... Read more →

After making us wait for so long... Maeve Elizabeth finally joined us Sunday morning. She was so sweet to let us get a full night of sleep and then arrived quickly, in just three hours, and was born at 9 a.m. She weighed 8 lb and 10 oz and was 20.75 inches long. Her birth was so quick after we waited so long for her – it was really surreal to be holding her! Our birth at the birth center was an incredible and peaceful experience. Compared to my previous two births I felt even more present and empowered by... Read more →

...many (many?) more to go. Overall it was a good week though minus up and down anxiety about the state of the world and how strict to be with social distancing. It even almost felt normal to have the boys home all week. Maybe my brain is just stuck on spring break mode. Our daily schedule Our approach to "homeschool" is very laid back and so far we don't have a lot of structure to our days. Our boys are really calm and tend to be more agreeable (ahem) in the morning so I've found that to be a great... Read more →

Today would have been the day the boys went back to school after spring break so it feels like the first day of our new normal. Although that's not even the right phrase because what is normal right now? We're adjusting day by day. I think that is the new normal: adjusting. How we're social distancing right now The situation with the pandemic in the U.S. felt like it became more serious to us with last Friday's announcement that the boys' school would be closed. We're having conversations every day about how we can best be helpers in this situation... Read more →

Hi friends, how are you? These are weird and scary times and I wanted to say hi. There's so much uncertainty and change related to the coronavirus pandemic and my anxiety is certainly higher than it's been in months. It's an especially weird time for us because we also have this unknown of when we'll be adding a fifth family member and how life will change after that. So it feels especially hard to plan right now which is challenging for me. Life went from feeling pretty normal at the beginning of the week to feeling eerie as we headed... Read more →

Feeling thankful (and full!) after a cozy Thanksgiving at our house yesterday. Little cousins ran around and played, we had a delicious spread, and the little boys had pretty good table manners! After dinner we set the little kids up with a movie and played Vertellis as a family. It was a great way to learn more about each other and ourselves! (The boys helped me make shapes for the sweet potato pie in case you can't tell. Also: recipes for sweet potato pie, chocolate cream pie, and lentil loaf wrapped in puff pastry.) Stocking up on Boogie Wipes and... Read more →

Sundays are a beginning and an end: the end of the weekend, the start of a new week. After several days of being out in the world and feeling the influence of so much input I love to make Sundays a day to reset; to exist only in the world that includes our home and family. I wrote about the concept of the Sunday home that I love so much years ago (look how little the boys are!) and I still think about creating a Sunday home. I find it comforting to look for the rituals in our life and... Read more →

Friends, I'm so excited to share some big news: we're expecting Baby Wharton #3!!! And we're having a baby girl! We are over the moon to being having another baby. It was something we thought about a lot over the past couple of years (and honestly ever since we had Cedric it's been in the back of my mind) but we just couldn't make a decision. I had a chart of pros and cons taped to our bathroom mirror for a long time. I hate being in limbo over big life decisions and really didn't like the feeling of not... Read more →

Fall is always slow to arrive here but this year it's been especially dragging. And I've been slow to get back into my creative school year routine. But with the heat breaking a little bit and our routines starting to feel more established I'm feeling my creative energy coming back. Hooray! Here's what's been going on lately... Weather + mood + the boot August and September were unexpectedly tough months for me. It was HOT. So hot. This summer was the hottest and driest that we've ever had. School drop off and pick up, running errands, and managing the boys... Read more →

Swimming with the boys most afternoons. Temperatures have been over 110 degrees (!!!) most days and the pool is the only place to be. A few friends have invited us over to swim in their pools and I've found a local public pool that we love. As soon as I get in the water life instantly feels 100% better even if we've been having a great day. Ahhhhhhhh. Plus there's the bonus of wearing out the boys. Scrambling to read all the books that I have out from the library, eeep! I've been doing a bad job managing my holds... Read more →
