Hall Closet Clean Out

I am very happy to bring you the results of cleaning out our front hall closet. It's a space we use everyday since it's where we store Drew's collar and leash and coats but it's so messy! Or at least it used to be.

I love our sunny and colorful front room...

but behind the closet door was something less appealing...

Shoes in a pile. Do we really need three basketballs?

 Randomness...

The "brains" of our home audio system live on the top shelf. (Unfortunately it requires a lot of wires and there's not a lot that can be done. Boo.)

Whew, that was a bit embarassing. But on to improvement!

First, I took everything out of the closet. Drew started playing with the basketballs and rolled two away...

Our wedding favor frisbee!

So many coats.

Once everything was out of the closet, Chris and I went through our things and put a lot aside to be donated and we threw out some things too. I thought about what purpose we really needed the hall closet to serve. It needs to store:

+ Drew's leash, harness, collar and accessories (which is a nice way of saying poo bags)

+ Coats and hats that we wear most frequently, usually for walking Drew

+ The shoes we wear to walk Drew and shoes we use when exercising (it's starting to sound like our hall closet should be renamed the Drew closet...)

+ Games we play most frequently

+ The receiver for our home audio system, our Apple TV, internet modem and wireless router

Keeping all of these things in mind, I headed to Target for some organizing solutions. Here's what I came up with!

Yay, yay, yay! I feel so much better. Here's a closer look at what's going on:

The ground level is cleared of the shoes since they have hanging storage now. We just have one basketball, a football, and a couple of frisbees (they're Drew's favorite).

I put three stick-on hooks inside the door to the left. They now hold Drew's collar, leash, and harness and are kept conveniently out of sight.

Now our favorite games are easy to grab. And anyone opening our hall closet can instantly see what Catan nerds we are. We're not ashamed.

There wasn't much to be done for the top shelf but having the rest of the closet organized makes me feel better about the busyness up there.

The closet is a much more efficient use of space now and I'm not embarrassed to open the door anymore, whew!
